ServicesThe CoDesign Commons seeks more inclusive environments, services, and technology - three of the most important domains of daily life. As a commoner you join a national corps of older adults who are experts on their own lives and, hence, have much to offer that can result in better design and development across these domains. Our service IS the commons - a public space, egalitarian in nature, where common issues, problems and concerns can be addressed through the power and creativity of the group.

environmentsMuch housing, including specialized senior housing, simply doesn't work to accommodate changes in physical or social status. It's Peter Pan housing. In public spaces (including commercial environments), ageism is baked in: poor lighting, poor acoustics, poor (or no!) seating, etc., as if older people shouldn't even be there.

servicesAs people age, they may encounter new kinds of needed services: transportation, health care, food assistance, leisure, banking, etc.
Both for profit and not for profit services in too many instances are definitely not "age-friendly." Good design (CoDesign) can change this.

technologiesEven if you are totally comfortable with technology, you know that most older people are not. Most technology innovations, today, are designed and implemented without any truly significant assistance from older adult end users. Is it any wonder that, while the market is huge, market failures are rampant?

Our working modelWhether it's environments, services or technologies, we work to support the engagement of older adults in the design and development process. We provide education and consultation to professionals seeking to develop better outcomes through collaborative relationships with seniors.

Our partnersWe are actively building a corps of older adults around the nation who seek to use or learn design skills in order to better inform the design process and create outcomes based on a deeper understanding of the aging experience.

How we do thisWe develop educational programs on codesign for seniors and designers.
We recruit older adult "commoners" into an ongoing relationship to build a national panel of experts. We invite professionals to join with commoners in the design process. We create a shared virtual and, someday, public space where codesign for a more inclusive world can happen. |
